Volume 31: Recollections of Nineteenth Century Buckinghamshire (1998), 194+ix pp

edited by Ian Toplis, George Clarke, Ian Beckett and Hugh Hanley

The four memoirs in this volume cover a wide range of Buckinghamshire life in the nineteenth century. The autobiographical account of Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-78), the architect, describes his background and early life in North Buckinghamshire to 1827 (pp.1-63); the journal of Elizabeth George (b.1803) of Dadford provides a highly individual view of affairs at Stowe in the 1840s as seen by a tenant (pp.65-122); the personal reminiscences of Owen Peel Wethered (1837-1908) of Marlow give an inside story of the formation of the Bucks Volunteers, 1859-79 (pp.123-172); and the historical notes of Oscar Blount (c.1842-1933) on Bulstrode, near Gerrards Cross, incorporate his recollections of the house and of the many distinguished guests who were entertained there (pp.173-194). The 13 illustrations include 10 sketches of local buildings by Scott dated 1826-1931.
